Helloooooooooo again.

So very happy you popped in. My camo jeep is all polished and spiffy, ready for us to spend time together as we explore my Untamed, Unexpected, Unforgettable World. Today we will meander around pets and animals that have bonded with us humans.  To bask in the love of animals, to see them flourish as they bask in ours, is truly a gift and one I appreciate every day.

Mark Twain said: When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction. I believe that to be the case with anyone who loves animals.

It was a sad week last week. Two families I love lost their aging pets. I feel enormous empathy because, as you know, our Tula is 108 human years and counting. If only our precious fluffies could live with us forever…

I found this in my Nice News feed. Though it comes as no surprise to us animal lovers, here is scientists’ “BIG” discovery:

Researchers in South Korea monitored the brainwaves of 30 adults as they engaged in eight different interactions with a standard poodle named Aro. They found that walking the dog induced relaxation; massaging and grooming her enhanced concentration without stress; and playing with her yielded both effects. They reported they felt less stress, fatigue, and depression after engaging in the various pup-related activities.

Geez, I wonder how WE can apply to spend a small country’s R&D budget playing with dogs?

I know many of my readers have exotic pets and I’d love for you to show them off on my Facebook page.  Post them on  Author Jill Wallace

I grew up in a menagerie because my brother – 17 years older than I – was an assistant zoo keeper and he’d bring home any animal that needed human attention. We lived in a third floor flat! My mom and he took turns feeding three orphaned leopards by bottle every two hours until they could eat on their own. Their mamma had rabies. We also had a young, untethered monkey ‘boarding’ with us while the zoo built a new cage so they could integrate him into the existing troop. He was super mischievous and rubbed his food all over every surface of the flat, much to my mother’s chagrin, but nobody messed with him. He was mean and had the sharpest teeth I ever saw. There was also a penguin who thought he could fly…a meerkat who’d lost her clan…it was a zoo in our flat and I relished every second!

But my best pets were white rats. I fell in love with them when I was three. My folks bought me a boy-rat from the pet shop and we named him Elvis. Two days later I went rushing into my folks’ bedroom yelling “Elvis has pink elephants in his cage.” Well, I was looking at Elvis’s ten babies from back to front – I thought their tails were trunks. So much for the pet shop ‘experts’ who promised Elvis was a boy!

My rats came out of their cage every day to play and cavort and entertain. They were an integral part of my family right up till I left home in my mid- twenties.

An adorable pet white rat features front and center in my Time Flies Book 2, Timeless Pirouette.

The protagonist, Polina, a ballet dancer in 1886 Moscow, is holding onto her coveted position at the barre by the skin of her teeth. Despised by her fellow dancers, mostly royals and girls following in their famous ballerina mother’s footsteps, poor Polina trudges around in her father’s old army coat and boots with a hole in one sole covering her satin ballet slippers. Her only friend is Coupe´, her beloved white rat her father gave her before he went to war for the last time. But then she meets her soulmate. A one-legged beggar who loves Coupe´ as much as she does, and…

OH, I can’t wait for you to dive into Timeless Pirouette later this year.

After I began Polina’s story, to celebrate my birthday, dear friend Deb commissioned an artist in Germany to make me a white rat. She is gorgeous and so lifelike. And she even came with a piece of felt cheese! Here is Coupe´ whose beady eyes gaze down on me making sure I have fingers on keys to make her story come alive.

See how animals never forget those they love. Xx
